Udawalawe National Park is one of the best safari destinations in Sri Lanka, especially known for guaranteed elephant sightings. Located on the border of the Southern and Uva provinces, the park was created to protect the watershed of the Udawalawe Reservoir and has now become a major wildlife habitat with open grasslands, scrub forests, and wetlands. Unlike denser jungle parks, Udawalawe offers wide open landscapes, making it easier to spot animals clearly during safaris.
Udawalawe National Park is one of the best safari destinations in Sri Lanka, famous for its large herds of elephants that are often seen very close to safari jeeps. The park also has water buffalo, crocodiles, deer, wild boar, jackals, and many bird species, and its open landscape makes wildlife easy to spot and ideal for photography, especially for first-time safari visitors. Safaris are usually done in the early morning or late afternoon, with the dry season from May to September offering the best wildlife viewing as animals gather around water sources. Most jeep safaris start from nearby areas like Udawalawa or Embilipitiya, and visitors are advised to carry sun protection, water, and cameras while following park rules. A popular nearby attraction is the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home, where orphaned elephant calves are cared for before being released back into the wild.
